Train Trip: April 2013
Beginning Saturday night, April 27, I went on a six-night, six-day
trip around the Western United States by Amtrak. I took the Southwest
Chief from Flagstaff to Los Angeles, the Coast Starlight from Los
Angeles to Portland, the Empire Builder from Portland to Chicago, and
the Southwest Chief again from Chicago to Flagstaff. Anticipating less
than ideal photographic conditions, I brought my MP3 player instead of
the fancy camera. Out of nearly 350 shots, I kept the following.
Each night of the trip, with the exception of a hotel in Chicago, was
spent in a sleeper car. The basic "roomette" on the train costs about
as much per night as a deluxe balcony stateroom on an Alaska cruise
(which is coming up on my wish list in the next few years).
Nonetheless, I thought it was absolutely delightful.
